Irani Cup to be played behind closed doors due to coronavirus
MUMBAI: On a day on which it postponed IPL-13 to April 15 and called off the remaining ODIs of the India-South Africa series due to the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus, the BCCI has made it clear that the Irani Cup - the annual fixture in domestic cricket between the Ranji Trophy champions and the Rest of India team, is on.
The match, between Saurashtra, who clinched the Ranji Trophy by beating Bengal in the final on Friday, and Rest of India, which will include all India hopefuls, will be played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium from March 18 to 22.
"Yes, the match will be held, but the spectators won't be allowed," Saba Karim, BCCI GM, cricket operations, told TOI on Friday.
In the last few days, plenty of events in the sporting world have either been cancelled or are being played in front of empty stadiums due to COVID-19.
